NEW ZEALAND UNDERWATER HERITAGE GROUP

Preserve your past to understand your future

Underwater heritage sites are a fragile and steadily decaying source of historical information. There are some 2000 shipwrecks scattered around New Zealand’s coast representing a significant and rich source of knowledge about our culture and history. The New Zealand Underwater Heritage Group would like to see these sites discovered, recorded and protected for the benefit of future generations.

FIND OUT MORE

New Zealand Underwater Heritage Group wants to
embrace technologies that accurately survey, record, conserve and protect shipwreck sites. This may encompass methods of recovery and conservation to further the knowledge of these events that can be
disseminated for the public or academic interest alike.

By fostering relationships and working with government agencies, academic institutions and other likeminded organisations NZUHG’s mission is to increase public awareness and interest in New
Zealand’s maritime and cultural underwater heritage and the importance of its conservation.
